SUMMARY:
The Senior Business Consultant is responsible for a client portfolio of at least 800 hours of one-to-one counsel with a heavier ratio of service to existing companies than startup ventures. The Senior Business Consultant is not only a generalist, but also must possess skills in a specific business area such as finance or marketing, evidenced by extensive experience and credentials in the specific field. Clients necessitating in-depth work in the area of the business consultant’s expertise will be counseled by that advisor.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
 
Responsibilities:
               Counsels one-to-one a client portfolio of at least 800 hours with a heavier ratio of service to existing companies than startup ventures.
               Provides existing business owners assistance in areas of: in-depth business plan development, strategic plan development, industry information, industry comparisons, ratios, cash flow projections, market research, referral to other resources throughout the state and local communities of the region.
               Assists clients in accessing capital through both traditional and non-traditional financial institutions.
               Develop and maintain network for referral of clients; actively engage existing and/or growing businesses in service area, advocating for utilization of MI-SBTDC assistance.
               Build and maintain relationships with small business support organizations, financial institutions, consultants, and other public and private sector business resource partners.
               Delivers MI-SBTDC training programs to groups as appropriate. Facilitates both long-term training programs (8 to 10 week programs) and is able to competently conduct a majority of the MI-SBTDC developed workshops to regional small business groups.
               Provides clients with information on SBA, USDA, SBIR, STTR, MEDC and local and federal loan programs.
               Manage the service area client portfolio to assure: attendance at scheduled appointment times; meaningful progress by client and counselor by follow-through on “next-steps” tasks; follow-up to build and maintain client relationships and capture impact validation.
               Maintains detailed electronic records of client assistance in the client management system in accordance with MI-SBTDC policies and procedures.
 
 
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Under the supervision of the State Regional Director, with functional oversight provided by Michigan Works BCVB Director of Business and Industry, the MI-SBTDC Business Consultant is responsible for serving as the catalyst for growth of Michigan’s small high tech, innovative and fast growing companies.
 
 
 
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree and certification as a Business Consultant are highly preferred. Three to five years professional work experience in economic development, business consulting, banking or accounting and/or business ownership are also preferred.  Must demonstrate a high level of skill with Microsoft Office products, including Excel. Must have good interpersonal and communications skills, the ability to organize, prioritize and a demonstrated understanding of the industries driving the Michigan economy.
